Motifs are everywhere – in nature, in art and design. In this introductory workshop we will design an original motif; the building block for surface and textile design.
A motif is the starting point for surface and textile design. Both digital and screen printed textiles begin with simple motifs, which can be customized and modified through colour, scale and repetition. In this class we’ll learn how to create a unique hand drawn motif using basic repeat structure and prepare final selections of artwork on tracing paper.
Emily Wills is the creative director of SURFACE 1°22 – a design collective that collaborates with artists and designers from around the globe to share and showcase surface design through exhibitions, events and workshops to explore the cross-discipline of fashion and textile design.
