There comes a time in everybody’s life when you have to stand up and speak. This class will help you find the words to make sure you will be heard and remembered – for all the right reasons.
We will be discussing different types of speeches, from wedding toasts to convocation speeches, and then drill down to see that these are actually not so different at all. Like any piece of writing, a good speech has a set structure and follows certain rules. It is this structure and these rules that we will look at. Once we have the building blocks in place, all we need is to fill in the words and the speech will (practically) write itself.
Katrijn de Ronde has been juggling words for most of her life, most recently as speech writer at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Before that she wrote for online and print publications on energy, business, personal finance and careers. Her background is in medieval history and film studies. She came third in the Dutch national English speaking competition while in secondary school, so it’s fair to say her career has finally come full circle.
